statement

2004-2006

Aviation shows the possibility for laws, such as gravity, to be broken for temporary periods of time. The ability of flight allows for an escape from the ground into a calming endless space. This state of mind is free from obligations and other distractions of everyday life. Therefore flight is the basis in which I start all of my adventures.

Each endeavor is a blueprint filled with the ideas and thoughts that clutter my brain. These thoughts and ideas are distractions that will not allow for an escape into a new state of mind. Collaging images together that are collected from my experiences with the earth and sky I am able to create another world. As the images interact with each other commonalities between them start to become evident. A bird, a winged creature capable of flight, can share a common experience with a horse that while running can have all four legs free of the ground at the same time. These interpretations bring me to a state of mind that is simple, child-like, where only dreams exist. This process gives me temporary moments of clarity and focus. However, not all the images selected have similarities that reveal themselves, which forces a continuation of the journey. The additional layering of images darkens the work, blocking the field of view from its origin. These boundaries bring the new world created back to the realm of logic and reason. When each expedition reaches its end, the piece left is the residue that documents the past and shows new plans for the next great attempt. It is my hope that by showing the possibility of these attempts, failed and successful, that a viewer might be able to suspend their disbelief long enough for them to travel into a frame of mind that is temporarily free of the world.
